Phu Lien Pagoda - An Ancient Ly Dynasty Temple in the Heart of Thai Nguyen Phu Lien Pagoda, also known as Phu Lien Tu or Phu Chan Thien Tu, is situated on a hill shaded by ancient trees in the center of Thai Nguyen city. Built during the Ly Dynasty, the pagoda takes its name from the ancient village of Phu Lien. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the pagoda served as a sanctuary for the insurgent forces of Hoang Hoa Tham and Doi Can during the resistance movement against French colonialism—adding a layer of national historical significance to its religious space. Following restorations in 1975 and 1996, the pagoda retains its original architecture, including the Three Jewels Hall (Tam Bao), the Mother Goddess Hall (Dien Mau), the Ancestor Hall, and the ancient stupa garden. In the courtyard stands a statue of Guan Yin, and inside, the temple preserves a golden horizontal lacquered board inscribed with the four characters "Linh Son phuc dia" (Sacred Mountain, Blessed Land). The quiet, elevated setting amidst the urban landscape creates an intriguing contrast between the ancient and the modern, making it an ideal filming location without needing to travel far from the city center. With its authentic ancient architecture and verified historical ties to the anti-French resistance, this location is well-suited for historical films depicting insurgent movements against the French, as well as documentaries on Vietnamese Buddhist culture.
