Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has surpassed $1 billion in international box office revenue, becoming the 17th film in history to achieve this milestone. As of the end of September 5, the epic film from Universal Pictures has grossed $1.014 billion in overseas markets, contributing to a total global box office of $1.59 billion.

Notably, The Odyssey has also become the first Hollywood film that is neither a sequel nor a remake to surpass the $1 billion international mark since James Cameron's Avatar in 2009. With its current revenue, The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing film in Christopher Nolan's career, surpassing the director's previous works.

In the international box office, the UK and Ireland are the largest markets for The Odyssey with $109.2 million. China ranks second with $92.7 million, followed by France with $84.6 million, South Korea with $74 million, and Italy with $63.2 million. Germany reached $57.5 million, Australia $43 million, Spain $41 million, Mexico $37.3 million, and India $23.5 million.

The Odyssey opened with $264.1 million globally, marking the biggest debut of Christopher Nolan's career, surpassing the performance of The Dark Knight Rises in 2008. The international market alone brought in $139.6 million in its opening week, also the director's highest overseas debut.


The film simultaneously set a record for the largest opening for a Christopher Nolan work in 52 markets, including Brazil, France, Italy, India, South Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, and more. According to People, a key factor contributing to the film's box office results is its performance in IMAX. The Odyssey has grossed over $457 million globally from IMAX screenings, making it the highest-grossing film in the history of this format.

Given the film's popularity, IMAX has also announced an extension of the screening period for 70mm IMAX theaters through the end of September. Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution at Universal Pictures, stated that The Odyssey has captivated audiences worldwide following its record-breaking debut and new revenue milestone. 

The Odyssey is currently still in theaters. Meanwhile, Universal continues to lead major studios in global box office revenue year-to-date with over $4.7 billion. The studio is also the first to surpass the $4 billion global revenue mark and $3 billion at the international box office in 2026.
