Explore the Chu Dang Ya volcano in Gia Lai—a unique volcanic landscape featuring basalt fields and the iconic wild sunflowers of the Central Highlands. Chu Dang Ya volcano is located in Bien Ho Commune, Gia Lai Province, approximately 30 km northeast of Pleiku city center and 20 km from the famous Bien Ho (T'Nung Lake). This is an extinct volcano that has been dormant for millions of years, featuring a funnel-shaped crater and standing about 500 meters above sea level. The highlight of Chu Dang Ya is its volcanic terrain combined with fertile basalt soil and the characteristic agricultural landscape of the highlands. The mountain slopes and surrounding areas create layered vistas, ranging from the crater and hillsides to farmlands and traditional Central Highlands villages. Seasonal changes in vegetation provide diverse visual aesthetics for the location. During the rainy season, patches of canna lilies create vibrant red hues around the mountain; in the dry season, particularly between October and November, wild sunflowers bloom, blanketing the slopes and access roads in gold. With its distinct volcanic morphology, expansive natural space, and seasonal landscape shifts, Chu Dang Ya has great potential as a backdrop for documentaries, nature exploration films, tourism promotional content, and cinematic projects capturing the beauty of the Central Highlands. The annual Chu Dang Ya Wild Sunflower Festival further contributes to the unique cultural and tourism atmosphere of the region. Information compiled by PTIT. Photo credits: VOV, Vietourist Holdings.
