Batman: Knightfall, the best Batman animation of the last decade

After a period of stagnation with a series of animated films inspired by the post-Crisis on Infinite Earths era, DC is returning to one of the most significant storylines in Batman's history.

Batman: Knightfall Part 1 - Knightfall is the first installment in a trilogy adapting the major comic book event Knightfall, while also initiating the confrontation between the Dark Knight and one of his most dangerous foes - Bane.
With a runtime of approximately 80 minutes, the film cannot encompass the entire massive scope of Knightfall. However, rather than attempting to tell too much, the production team chose to condense the story, focusing on Batman, his close allies, and Bane. The result is a fast-paced, visually striking work that remains particularly faithful to the spirit of the original source material.
Batman: Knightfall Part 1 takes place at a time when Bruce Wayne does not yet have a complete Bat-family by his side. He is accustomed to solving every problem on his own and views relying on others as nearly a weakness.
The situation becomes even more difficult when Tim Drake appears as the new Robin. Batman must simultaneously train his young apprentice and deal with a series of dangerous enemies who have escaped from Arkham Asylum.

Meanwhile, Jean-Paul Valley - who later becomes Azrael - is also struggling with obsessions and psychological manipulation from his past. Just as Batman becomes increasingly exhausted, Bane arrives in Gotham.
Unlike many versions of Bane that have appeared on screen, the character in Knightfall is not merely a giant with superior strength. Instead of immediately rushing into a decisive battle, Bane seeks to wear Batman down both physically and mentally. Each clash with a new enemy brings Bruce closer to his limit. It is this approach that makes Bane a genuine threat right from the start.
One of the most commendable aspects of Knightfall is how the film builds Bane. This character has been unsuccessfully adapted many times. Some versions turn Bane into a somewhat dim-witted muscle-bound brute, while others significantly diminish his inherent danger. Batman: Knightfall Part 1 chooses a different path. Bane is both terrifying, intelligent, and possesses clear motivations.
The film spends time introducing Bane's tragic childhood at Pena Duro prison, thereby explaining how the character formed his cold nature and strong will to survive. This past does not turn Bane into a hero, but it helps him become a character with more depth rather than just a "monster" for Batman to defeat. More importantly, Bane in the film truly makes the viewer believe that Batman could fail. If the story is the strength in terms of content, the visuals are one of the reasons that make Knightfall stand out.

The film features an art style strongly reminiscent of Batman in 1990s comic books. The influence of artists Kelley Jones and Norm Breyfogle can be recognized quite clearly. In particular, Batman's cape is often depicted fluttering, making the character look both human and like a creature of the shadows.
This is an aesthetic choice that fits the story perfectly. Knightfall does not try to turn Batman into a polished superhero. Gotham in the film is cold, gloomy, and heavy, matching the increasingly deteriorating mental state of Bruce Wayne.
Although it is a promising start, Knightfall is not a perfect adaptation. The biggest challenge lies in the scale of the original work. Knightfall and the entire KnightSaga span dozens of comic issues, not to mention important prequels like Sword of Azrael or Vengeance of Bane.

Some important connections between Bane, Gotham, and the Wayne family have also been condensed. Audiences who have never read the comics might feel that some details are introduced quite quickly. However, this also shows the prudence of the production team. Instead of cramming all of Knightfall into one film, Knightfall Part 1 focuses only on the core and reserves space to build up Batman's collapse.
The way the film ends is also logical, creating a direct premise for the second part without making the current story feel abruptly cut off. After the Crisis trilogy received a lukewarm response, Batman: Knightfall Part 1 - Knightfall shows that DC's animated film line still has a lot of potential.
The greatest success of the film is understanding what makes Knightfall a memorable story. This is not just a story about a villain who is stronger than Batman. It is a story about a hero who is too used to carrying everything on his own and finally has to face his own limits. Bane, therefore, does not just strike Batman with strength. He makes Bruce doubt his way of life, his fighting style, and even his ability to continue protecting Gotham.
