Judy and Nick will soon reunite with audiences after Zootopia 2 became the highest-grossing animated film in Hollywood history.

According to The Wrap, Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde will soon return to the big screen as Zootopia 3 has been officially greenlit for development by Walt Disney Animation Studios. This time, birds will be joining the animal metropolis.
Jared Bush, co-writer/director of Zootopia and Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, announced the news at the Honda Center in Anaheim during the D23 Expo, a biennial event hosted by Disney.
The third installment does not yet have a release date, but the project's accelerated development suggests that audiences will almost certainly not have to wait as long as they did for Zootopia 2, which premiered nine and a half years after the original film's release in April 2016.
During the premiere of the second film in November 2025, Ginnifer Goodwin—the voice of Judy the rabbit—shared with The Hollywood Reporter: "I am doing everything I can to make a third film a reality and hope the wait will be much shorter. All we need to do is get everyone in the world to go to the theaters to see the movie, which isn't too much to ask."
Disney's swift move to develop a third film is not surprising, as Zootopia 2 surpassed Pixar's Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing American animated film of all time, with $1.85 billion in global box office revenue. Among all animated films, it currently sits behind the Chinese sequel Ne Zha 2, which grossed $2.2 billion.
Zootopia 2 achieved this milestone thanks to its immense popularity in China, where it surpassed Avengers: Endgame to become the highest-grossing Hollywood production with $651 million. In a landscape where Chinese audiences are showing less interest in most American blockbusters, the colorful characters and story of Zootopia continue to resonate across cultural differences and national borders. The Zootopia land at Shanghai Disney Resort also remains one of the park's most popular attractions.

Zootopia 2 continues the story of Nick and Judy as their relationship as partners at the Zootopia Police Department is put to the test.
The pair simultaneously uncovers a multi-generational conspiracy involving the origins of Zootopia. This conspiracy has turned the multi-climate city into a place exclusive to mammals, while reptiles—including the adorable Gary De’Snake—have been pushed to the fringes of society.
In the post-credits scene, the third film is teased as Judy uses her newly repaired carrot-shaped digital recorder.
The device plays a recording of Nick saying to her: "Love you, partner."
As Judy places the pen on the windowsill and leaves her apartment, a feather falls next to it, hinting that Zootopia 3 will introduce birds into the diverse world of Zootopia. Both Zootopia films, along with the animated short series Zootopia+, are currently available to stream on Disney+.
