The Odyssey, adapted from Homer's epic poem, will be available for digital rental and purchase starting November 17, following its theatrical release on July 17. The film is also scheduled for a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release on the same day.
The digital version of the film arrives four months after Christopher Nolan's nearly three-hour epic premiered exclusively in theaters, marking a significantly longer theatrical window than most major studio films. Christopher Nolan and Universal previously adopted a similar approach with Oppenheimer, which stayed in theaters for 123 days before its release on video-on-demand platforms and physical media in November 2023.
The Odyssey has grossed approximately $1.35 billion globally, becoming the highest-grossing work in Christopher Nolan's career and, as of this week, the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, surpassing Deadpool & Wolverine. The production has also earned over $500 million in the domestic US market. The IMAX system alone contributed $257 million to the box office, making The Odyssey the highest-grossing film in the history of the studio's releases.
In the film, Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, the Greek king seeking to complete a perilous journey back to Ithaca after the Trojan War. The film's expansive cast also includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, along with Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Charlize Theron.
In his review of The Odyssey, Variety critic Guy Lodge remarked that the work "has almost no dull moments in this powerful and temporally complex interpretation, which is characteristic of this director."
However, he continued by noting: "While Damon delivers an excellent, weary performance as the wandering king of Ithaca, the film is felt more on a sensory level than an emotional one."
