Breathtaking box office race in Vietnam

Rarely in the history of the Vietnamese box office have the top three spots all been held by horror films. The trio engaged in a neck-and-neck race for performance records on June 17.

Statistics from Box Office Vietnam show that the top 3 most sought-after films in theaters are all in the horror genre: The Zombie Brigade, The Soul Eater, and Lau Chu Hoa. Among them, The Zombie Brigade is a production from South Korea, while the other two are Vietnamese.
On June 17, the trio engaged in a breathtaking competition in terms of revenue. The Zombie Brigade led with over 3.6 billion VND, selling approximately 46,000 tickets across nearly 2,000 screenings. The performances of The Soul Eater and Lau Chu Hoa were also closely trailing, with almost no significant gap between them. The revenue difference between the top-ranked film and the third-ranked film was less than 50 million VND.
However, when considering the average tickets sold per screening, Lau Chu Hoa performed better with 24 tickets/screening, while The Zombie Brigade sold 23 tickets/screening and The Soul Eater averaged about 20 tickets/screening.

Given the current metrics, it is likely that theaters will increase the number of screenings for The Zombie Brigade and Lau Chu Hoa in the coming days. Both are newly released works currently receiving significant audience interest. Lau Chu Hoa has made an impression as the first Vietnamese horror film in the found footage style. Despite being a low-budget project, it has received positive feedback and is considered terrifying and intense in terms of viewer experience.
Meanwhile, The Zombie Brigade is a South Korean blockbuster. The film explores the familiar zombie theme but continues to draw large audiences to theaters thanks to the appeal of its star-studded cast and director Yeon Sang Ho—the helmer of the once-sensational box office hit Train to Busan.
As for The Soul Eater, the film has cooled down after about two weeks of release. The recorded revenue for the work is 130 billion VND (as of the evening of June 17).
The fact that three horror films are dominating Vietnamese theaters is a rare phenomenon. It proves that this genre is gradually regaining favor with local audiences after a period of being shunned due to mediocre quality. On the other hand, theaters are currently saturated with horror films, leaving viewers with few other choices.
