TPO - "Nghi he so nghi huu" (Summer Break, Retirement Fear) surpassed "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" in daily box office revenue on August 15, kicking off the race for Vietnamese films during the National Day holiday. Box office heat is expected to rise sharply as "Ho linh trang si: Bi an mo vua Dinh" (Guardian Warriors: The Mystery of King Dinh's Tomb) and "Quy tu vuot giau" (Rich Son, Poor Dad) join the fray on August 28, before "Len huong" (Rising Up) extends the film season into September.

The Vietnamese box office has seen a shift after two weeks of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" holding the top spot. According to Box Office Vietnam data updated on the morning of August 15, "Nghi he so nghi huu" has climbed to the top of the daily revenue chart.
Huynh Lap's film grossed over 3 billion VND from 32,341 tickets across 3,496 screenings. Including pre-sales and special screenings, the film's total revenue has reached over 10 billion VND.
"Nghi he so nghi huu" began special screenings from 6:00 PM on August 14 and played throughout August 15-16, ahead of its nationwide release on August 21. These initial results provide the film with an advantage in accumulating revenue and building word-of-mouth momentum.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" slipped to second place with nearly 2.4 billion VND for the day, selling 20,935 tickets across 1,375 screenings. The film's total revenue in Vietnam has now reached over 186.3 billion VND. The gap between the two films for the day was over 629 million VND.

"Nghi he so nghi huu" has the advantage of an early release, but peak competition begins on August 28. "Ho linh trang si: Bi an mo vua Dinh" and "Quy tu vuot giau" will both hit theaters just before the five-day National Day holiday.
"Quy tu vuot giau" was originally scheduled for release on September 11. The producer later moved the release date to August 28, with special screenings starting on the evening of August 27. This change forces the two Vietnamese films to compete directly for screen counts.
"Nghi he so nghi huu" has nearly two weeks to accumulate revenue before its two competitors arrive. The film follows Tri Binh, a Gen Z youth who returns to the countryside to live with his grandfather. Huynh Lap blends family themes and generational gaps with spiritual and comedic elements. The cast includes Meritorious Artist Cao Minh, Cody Nam Vo, Hong Anh, Hua Vi Van, Phuong Thanh, and Tin Nguyen.
The early release helps the film avoid having to share screen counts. When the two new films debut on August 28, cinema chains will adjust their schedules based on actual ticket sales.
"Ho linh trang si: Bi an mo vua Dinh" is positioned right at the heart of the holiday. Directed by Nguyen Phan Quang Binh, the film explores the legend of seven warriors tasked with transporting 99 coffins of King Dinh in various directions to distract enemies and protect the secret of the burial site.

A report by Cinemark indicates that in the first six months of 2026, the Vietnamese box office reached 3,198.4 billion VND with 35.13 million tickets sold. Domestic films accounted for over 2,076 billion VND, representing 65.3% of revenue from data with identified origins. The occupancy rate for Vietnamese films reached 25.5%, higher than the 15.7% for imported films.
However, this year's September 2nd season faces a high benchmark from the previous year. Three major films, "Mua do" (Red Rain), "Tu chien tren khong" (Aerial Death Match), and "Lam giau voi ma 2" (Ghost Money 2), achieved a combined total revenue of approximately 1,067 billion VND. Of these, "Mua do" grossed 714 billion VND, "Tu chien tren khong" reached 252 billion VND, and "Lam giau voi ma 2" earned 101 billion VND.
After the holiday, "Len huong" is expected to hit theaters on September 18, continuing the film season. With the current release schedule, "Nghi he so nghi huu" maintains its early-mover advantage, while the direct competition will take place between "Ho linh trang si" and "Quy tu vuot giau." The final outcome will depend on audience feedback, occupancy rates, and each film's ability to retain its screen count.
