How different will Netflix's One Piece be from the original anime?

Netflix's The One Piece will not just be a visual refresh of the old anime. The CEO of WIT Studio stated that the project is a reboot, with storytelling and pacing adjusted to suit a new audience.

Announced in 2023, The One Piece is a new anime project produced by WIT Studio, adapting the story from Eiichiro Oda's manga. Initially, many viewers assumed it would be a remake of the One Piece anime, but new insights from WIT Studio suggest the project may bring more changes than expected.
In an interview with Manta Web, George Wada, CEO of WIT Studio, referred to The One Piece as a "reboot" rather than a "remake." Simply put, a remake usually involves recreating an old work while keeping most of the original story. Meanwhile, a reboot also starts from scratch, but the production team can adjust the storytelling, pacing, and certain details to create a version that aligns with a new vision. This means The One Piece could differ significantly from the currently airing anime.
According to revealed information, the first season of The One Piece is expected to adapt approximately 70 chapters of the manga, covering from the beginning of the story to the end of the Baratie arc.
This part is expected to consist of 7 episodes, each about 42 minutes long. If this holds true, the adaptation pace will be much faster than the original anime, which took about 30 episodes to reach the same milestone.
With a longer runtime per episode but fewer episodes in total, the production team will likely focus on key plot points, minimizing the filler segments often found in long-running anime series.
